Info about problem with application I suggested

A while back I suggested some programs that I like and use.  All but one is freeware.  There are minor changes and a warning about a situation that almost bit me the other day.

I’ll start with the problem.  AVG is not currently compatible with the email program I use.  It is Thunderbird and AVG normally checks the email for virus and trojan content.  With the latest upgrade to Thunderbird, it is, at least for now, incompatible.  Email is a source of virus activity and I encountered that in three recent attachments.

The first two said my credit card had been charged for two tickets on Southwest.  The most recent said I had a FedX package that was overweight that I need to make arrangements to deliver.  It was obvious that none of those were Kosher. The files all had ZIP file attachments with the details.  I copied the files to the desktop without opening them and had AVG test them separately.  All contained a keystroke capture trojan.

With AVG failing to work as it did in the past, it was a vulnerable time.  Logic still dictated that things weren’t right and, fortunately,  I caught it. The method I used was simple but not intuitive for most folks.  If you have any thought that something might not be right, double check.  AVG has an option when you right click to verify that item.   It is easy to use.  Having done that my banking info hopefully remains secure.

Y’all be careful out there.

In the programs I was recommending, there are a couple of changes.   Open Office has changed and there are two versions.  I would now recommend one called Libre Office as the better alternative.

I recommended Icon Restore.  That is still good if you are running 32-bit windows.   I am running the 64-bit and it doesn’t work with that.  I found a replacement called Desk Save.  I don’t like it quite as well but it does the very same job well.

I use open office and Thunderbird too. Not bad stuff. Also use the calendar that attaches to Thunderbird. AVG is good for what it does.. I am just not stupid and do not open attachments in emails. Unless they are from you Ken..

Ancient and trustworthy.  Not the inspiration I hoped for…

For non-sinners, AVG isn’t really needed.  If you have some knowledge, it can also be passed.  But, it is a bit of security on days your brain may be hemorrhaging.
