The Mosque

OK, here is my two cents. It took me time to arrive at a conclusion. And, I changed my view along the way.

You know I have a Libertarian bent. If I’m going to talk the talk then I need to walk the walk. So let them build it.

Humans have a brain. Duh! But it is a complex thingy. It is constantly waring with itself. It has its scientific approach coupled to emotion. This is a great example of the outcome that result.

If there is anything that resembles an out of control poker hand, this is it. “I’ll see your raise and…” You know what is coming and you owe me a dollar for listening. Doyle blogs and today it started:

DOYLEISM OF THE DAY: “Nothing sucks more than the moment you realize you were wrong during a heated argument.”

Of course the problem here is finding out which side is sucking the most. The Muslims were stupidly insensitive. The 9/11 crowd certainly had to dot every eye and define all of lower Manhattan as ground zero to get so incensed. Both sides are dragging out the worst connotations they can manage. They can’t get beyond the visceral.

Then there is the fact that the mosque isn’t a mosque. It is little more than their version of the YMCA with a chapel included. Anybody can join and is welcome. You might not be uncomfortable joining without a beard but what the hey. It is reaching out by a community not noted for doing so.

The Imam that’s responsible for the idiotic idea is pretty middle of the road. His Wiki bio shows he holds normal biases and that causes some goofs in his resume. But, you can use that indictment against all organized religion. At its best, organized religion can barely claim “enlightened bigotry” and at times can’t claim the enlightened part. That is partially why the founder tried and failed to separate it.

If they want to be more sensitive, they could make the wall facing Mecca into a memorial wall that held the name of the many Muslims who lost their lives in the World Trade Center. There were a bunch. I doubt any jihadists will willingly use that room for their prayers.

What’s really needed is renergizing the idea of the melting pot. When we can’t discern those who are different from us, we keep our emotional side in check.
