If you don’t like the weather,
wait 5 minutes. It is a line favor by wags of all stripes. The weather around here can be described as changeable. But the line is more jape than truism. That has sure been true this summer. The weather has been nasty…day after day after…
Another farmyard favorite is: Hotter than the hubs of hell. During the cold season well diggers are more frequently discussed.
The thing about getting old is the ability to look back. Yes, it can be an annoying trait. I’ll try to avoid that but no real promises.
The Greens are using the season as proof that global warming is runaway to the point we need to sacrifice our quality of life. I don’t know what it is about reformers and those creating legislation but they always can find the flimsiest of excuses to try to dictate our lives. And those dictates always seem but a momentary stopping point.
Back in aught… well it was actually the early 50’s we had a summer much like this – actually worse. I can remember sweltering in school starting in early spring. I think the record temperature for the area happened that summer at 107. I can remember that day. It was before air conditioning. We lay in our underwear on the basement floor. I will never forget how welcome that cold cement felt on my bare back.
My parents recall taking the baby – me – along to the lakefront to watch the 4th of July fireworks. There were flakes of snow in the air. At least that’s what they claim and they were honest folk.
The last ten years around here have been rather temperate. Last summer I used the A.C. Only three times. I think the summer before it was five. But, I don’t mind the 80’s if the humidity is reasonable. Others during that time ran it all summer and never opened a window. I wouldn’t call that living but a major part of my life was with cooling only in theaters. On a hot night in summer, everybody used 440 cooling. Families would get in the car; roll down all four windows and drive around at 40 m.p.h. By 9:30 it cooled off enough you could go back inside.
So, when the evening news and White House gives their perspective of the weather, I have a broader frame of reference. Yes, that reference is tempered by only 70 years of experiences. In geologic time, that hardly waiting 5 minute for a change. It is a second or so at that scale.
We are a pretty smart animal. But, we can be dumb about our observations. We see that at the tables and from pundits of every variety. The only sure thing is that change happens. I’ve seen a lot of that. Previous generations saw as much or more. The only thing we can do is follow Scarlet’s remark: “Tomorrow is another day.” I’ll add: “Keep your perspective as broad as you can and enjoy the day.” Don’t let others dictate that day.
