You don’t mess around with Jim
Jim Croce had an interesting list of things not to do. Probably most guys have even agreed when an errant gust at least had the woods help conceal their error. In a bar, we tend to avoid drunken confrontations over matter that other times would be minor. And, then there that thing called common courtesy. They combine to make the world most know better than the wild west.
Most of my views are fairly mainstream. Mom said be a gentlemen and I still try hard to make her proud. The ones that would offend the other guy are ones I avoid throwing in their face – at least on my successful days. And, I appreciate others when they’re obviously doing the same.
Sex Options
When it comes to sex, I like closets. Not just for the perceived or obvious ones but for most or all overt displays. At its best, sex is as much humor as hormones. Porn has never been my public attraction. I’m about as publicly white bread as it gets and appreciate the at least apparent similarity in others.
I’m hetro but if you aren’t that’s your decision. I dated a girl on Chicago’s near north side who was far more liberal. We avoided politics and had a great go of it. In nice weather we’d take a walk and the neighborhood was what is called Boy’s Town although Girl’s Town would have equally applied. The flag of choice carried a rainbow.
On meeting and watching folks, I didn’t paw her or overtly display bedroom practices. But others who were out and proud seem to throw their private lives at the world. Why? Well, some consider it their responsibility to “the cause” but how well does it work? With the bulk of the population, rather poorly. So, we end up back at Croce’s wizzing recommendation being ignored.
This was inspired by a bit of news I stumbled across. How stupid does it get? Weren’t we smart enough to quit drawing lines in the sand when we left the school yard? This is the same as when the skinhead’s hold a rally in Skokie. Resolution take a back seat to agenda. It is all personal gratification.
Marriage is the current jousting arena. That too is as stupid a choice with both sides relishing the argument more than resolution. My Soch 101 prof also waxed eloquent and somewhat confrontationaly on the institution. But we took it with a grain of salt because the Soch department was chock-a-block full of weirdos. But, it pointed out that marriage is emotionally based with varied requirements intruding that were codified over long periods of time. Rational is well down the list of reasons. It really boils down to primates not being too functional in their early stages. Cattle don’t consider matrimony yet farm fields display all the various life choices along the way. The unattractive remark here would be that steers and gays share a heritage. Shabby to even think but the subconscious is a fairly shabby place.
The real argument boils down to equal rights. But what is equality before the law never replaces human goals. My obvious comparison here would be to the UIGEA. Emotions exceed rationality. Compromise isn’t the goal. That is sad. But, time and again, side make the battle the goal. The places where we can agree get trampled by the process.
No, we all just can’t get along. Marital unions would resolve a big part of the issue being argued but isn’t deemed adequate. Exchanging rings in a setting of choice has never been illegal. A simple resolution that is obvious isn’t important as Croce explains with the only humor to be found. The song is about a hustler and it seems that’s the true life style sought by both sides in the matrimonial sweepstakes. I guess we just can't help not messing with Jim and all the rest.
ADDENDUM:
With the writeup of the UIGEA killer, it seems a time to be careful what we wish for. There is big money in play. It dwarfs the Durr – Antoninus marathon. There are definite sides. Will Nevada and the traditionals kill the upstart illegal sites. Some of this already played out with the Stars elimination from hosting tournaments in Vegas. The B&M crowd certainly seem to be positioning themselves to give that a go. I’ve got to feel that Harrahs sees a pot of gold in branding possibilities. It is gonna get dirty, I fear.

Why would "Unions" not be adequate? I have always thought that is the way to go. Remove marriage as a "Legal" and "Contractual" thing as an option for EVERYONE. States recognize only unions not marriages. So you go to the town hall, get your notorized union, and are done for purposes of property, taxes, legally being screwed, etc, etc.. then if you have any kind of religious affiliation feel free. Changes nothing in the eyes of the state/country if you do or do not.
K.P. my friend, have I ever told you how much I look forward to sitting down to discuss 'life' with you? We may need her to leave the bottle!
Trying to find how a guy who’s made all the mistakes got to this point?
This Wikileaks debacle seems to fit right in here. We become godlike in our knowledge of what makes right. In truth, we are reverting to a tribal mentality where we gain comfort and justification in the crowd just like us. It explains too much of why we are the way we are.
