Position!
I am going to do my Tevye impression. I'll climb up on the roof and start belting out POSTION! POSITION! But, I can't play the fiddle.
With a more modest stack to work with than it was on P* -- that's where I got paid each month, I'm playing cheap tournaments on FullTilt where I just got my first rakeback payment of .97. (Be still my heart.) My playing tournaments again is something I didn't think would happen. I had burned out but they now seem reasonable.
I'm typically lasting a couple of hours. And, most of the time I'm not going out from that boredom tilt.
These aren't televiseable tournaments unless you buy programming for the comedy channel.
The worst mistake people make – and the list is long – is playing weak/drawing hands from out of position. If they've ever read a poker book, it was one that didn't cover this. Don't get me wrong, I love a good implied odds hand as much or more than the next guy. But 79s is a lot weaker under-the-gun than on the button. Yet, they seem to work that and more from the damnedest spots.
I guess you could try to make a case that their problem is playing junk hands but junk hands can be deadly effective. Most of the time I'm fairly ABC about things. With the spraying of chips that also goes on, you can't be Sir Galahad with your Level 5 moves when all they ever see at the table is what avatar folks chose.
There is a lot made over the aggressive style online players use. For many or most low-ball isn't part of their vocabulary. People do the damnedest thing with the damnedest collection of hands. Chip conservation is handled just like position and with the same cavalier attitude. But that likely just another page from their book of moves.
Now we call come down with a case of mental hemorrhoids from time to time. Late I might splash a drawing hand from out-of-position. But, early on, there is no reason for such silliness. We get reasonable stacks and can chose deeper stack games. Turbos still give a fair amount of play.
Even AA becomes a slight dog with five callers behind you. That can occasionally happen to a standard raise. So, why would someone want to push a drawing hand like it was AA? Or, just flat call with it with so many yet to act.
You can make a case for a lot of flaws but position is king of the hill.
