Poker-Daniel-Me
Well, maybe the order is mixed and the content with me and Danny being conspirators is suspect.I read his blog and the latest discussed the silliness of his calling the floor. Seemed a bit of overkill on a nothing much kind of misplay on another's part. But, it is hard to really bust anyone's chops over without having been there. The part I really want to discuss came farther down. He talked about the 'advance play' used by many folks he watched. It is the advanced play you see a lot in freerolls and cheap tournaments. Here's a bit from it: Typical hand. Player A raises, player B calls, player C on the button or in the SB re-raises, the "squeeze play," original raiser folds, and the other player goes all in. I saw this probably four or five times in the last two days. The hands I saw player B turn over included AQ, 88, 77, and KJ. The move failed miserably again and again, and just had me wondering, "Do these guys ALL play with 100 big blinds the EXACT same way they play with 30 big blinds?" It was just so strange, almost surreal to watch blow up, after blow up. He goes on to use the word spewy. Nicely invented word and spot on. Here's my part. I played a player's points, little tournament. It was a turbo with 4-minute blinds. I managed a few great starting hands earlier that pretty much saw me through what became a rather short tournament. No surprise given the blinds and players. You are going to gamble more or get lucky with crap more often in such a tournament. But one can even see such play in deep stacks or serious money tournaments. (I won the top price along with 21 others. It was an entry into the 200K special that FT is running this weekend. Looks like a great value as the buyin is only $5.50. See you there?) It is a great point he makes. People think changing gears is a decision one makes without considering the full background. One needs to chip up as things progress but it isn't a simple task and need tempers one's options. This all seems like a blogger gathering where we can get silly defining our chops. Those are often just fun events — with more to be won in posturing than in smart play. But, in the real world, Danny understands the need flow better than so many. He points out that folding the best hand is a part of that. It is a good thing to keep in mind when you think it silly to risk it all when your stack doesn't mean thinking more gamble. Changing gears, gambling, or just naked aggression should be tempered and honored based on the stack. Doesn't get any simpler than that.
ADDENDUM:
You may notice all the referrals to past post at the bottom. It is a good SEO type of thing to do. Problem for me is that I'm lazy and sometimes embarrassed to read my own stuff. This is being created by a plugin called YARPP. Not sure if I'd link all of them but it is better than nothing.
