The new Jimmies
Back in those good old days, some weren't as good as others. One of the lesser eras took place under the term of President Jimmy Carter who also moonlighted as a valet. His approach was austere. We need to limit our wants and needs. The U.S. was on the decline and he projected that it would continue on and on. Boy did that miss the mark.He was there as the Japanese were buying the country. Hindsight there says they may be inscrutable but they weren't the business elite. Most the real estate they picked up is back under our ownership for pennies on the dollar. Now Jimmy may just have been our smartest president. But, he sure sold his countrymen short. We'd gone through the first energy crisis and something called stagflation and a big downturn that gets reference by current times beating or reaching its numbers. He turned down the White House heat and put on a sweater to show us things he considered necessary. Today, the arena is rife with fellow travelers. It is about global warming along with energy and all the rest that emulates those times. We'd really screwed up then and he saw no way out. That's just like the global warming crowd – bright guys with data quoting galore. In case you've been off line, here is a link. Seems some hackers got into an English university where the climate change advocates kept their collection of emails. Scam seems the idea and the data they've been quoting was data they'd cooked. Rather than emulate Jimmy by turning down their heat, they used all that to pick up grant after grant. The difference between those doing the Jimmy was one of integrity. There activity isn't far from today's norm. Bankers, lobbyists and our politicians are all on the self-indulgent side of the table. Jimmy Carter at least believe he was doing the right thing. It wasn't but it didn't hurt others or stop them from proceeding to solve their own problems without huge interference. They reacted by working on small solutions and so started regrowing our economy. The thing that has changed is our self-reliance. Government wasn't the all-knowing solution back then. When they threw money around it was in the millions and not billions or trillions. Bail outs were frowned upon. Unemployment lines long but the people in them were embarrassed and looking for work. Many are still like that but it isn't getting past encouragement. Is the climate the worst thing that can happen to us at this time? Can we watch instead of throw money are projects that will continue to cost and cost? Do we still believe that we are the masters of our fate and the captains of our souls? That attitude was what brought us out of the awful 80 and gave us a lot of happiness along the way. Maybe the only thing worth of our trust is ourselves.
