Fall

My mother loved the seasons.  I like them when they cooperate a bit.  But, this year hasn't. My little lake has a few ducks showing up.  They are the earlier ones – diving ducks.  The bigger puddlers haven't shown yet.  The Geese are also missing.  The state says that the Sandhill Cranes are showing up.

My old home was under one of their routes.  The cranes are vocal in flight and loud.  I'd get notice that they were heading by and could go out to watch.  Once you've heard them, you'll aways know who's passing by.

This area became packed with heavy industry.  But it has always been amazing how our wildlife managed to adapt.  We've also grown too urbanized to recognize all the species that inhabit the area still.  Ecology was actually defined using an area close to where I now live.

I was a serious duck hunter a few years back and a member of Ducks Unlimited.  They restored wetlands in Canada.  While it is popular to pan hunters, most practice enlightened self-interest. They do more than PETA and even various Wilderness Societies.  DU restored thousand of acres of wetlands.  To improve hunting you improve populations.  The goal is coexistence.

I guess I do love the seasons.  Falls (normal ones) are a glorious time of change.  The color and the crispness in the air are a delight.  I won't ever be a big fan of January and February around here but I'll take it to have spring and fall.

I missed the Sandhill Crane migration this year. Too much time indoors at the infernal machine. But I hear ya. And hunters don't get a bad rap because of organizations like DU. They get it by shooting hunting buddies in the face and shoulder area with bird shot.

Most people like Spring, but, to me, Fall is the best season in Memphis.
