A picture is worth

getting cuffed and detained.  Yesterday, I mentioned PokerGrump and Professor Gates.  They both got asked for ID and didn't feel it appropriate.  Gates has since seen his charges dismissed.

Over in Blighty, an intrepid blooger/photog has joined this decreasingly exclusive group.   The officer felt intimidated by the “tall” photographer whose 5'11” height isn't going to get him many offers from the NBA.

Where did common sense flee to?   The street in question has those police cameras.  From the picture shown, it would seem a normal – well, maybe slightly garish – business district. Doesn't look like a spot to hit for an award winning picture.  But, it also doesn't look like a spot that'd be high on a terrorist hit list.   Yeah, any area might get included but you can probably get a Google Earth picture of the same street.

Tourist seem prone to taking pictures.  Countries like England appreciate tourism.  Shopping streets are places tourist show up.  If the police feel a need to ask sundry photogs for an ID, seems like it'll lead to full time work.  Maybe that's why they just pick on the 'tall' ones.

The politicians, when an incident occurs, are quick to grab a news crew and tell the citizens to “Go on leading your normal life.  Don't let the terrorist make you fearful.” and thats good advice.  So, you do and your next stop is sitting in a paddy wagon in cuffs.   That seems counter productive.

Police are rightfully given a lot of rights.  But, they aren't ever enough.  I don't argue that. What I argue is when they infringe on the Bill of Rights.  We've seen police excess.  It is a constant battle that has been fought over since 1776 and before.  Everyone, including the police, need to be more observant in these times.  It will be more intrusive but those who have increased responsibility should be equally concerned with not adding to the unrest.

All we need is a bit more common sense in applying Homeland Security guidelines.  Excessive zeal isn't the end all be all.  Like the politician said, we need to lead normal lives and even snap a picture or two along the way.

We need the support of and our support for police; but that should be tempered with their humanity and respect.  If I didn't want that, I could move to Iran or Russia which are vastly superior police states.

ADDENDUM:
Global warming?  Global warming?  I'm sitting here in a lined flannel shirt.  It never made it to summer storage.  According to the local weather guys, this is – so far – the 3rd coldest summer on record around here.  Yeah, I know.   It is hot elsewhere.  But, there a lot of things that we don't understand about the weather.  Unless – I guess – you're a green with an ax to grind.

All I have to say is:  Global warming?   Please pass me some.

That’s outrageous. I take photos all the time and would hate to think I would be arrested for doing so. We’ve only heard one side of the story, but it rings true. I’ll be interested in the follow-up.
