Cable V DSL
I've used the new setup through Verizon for several days now. The reason for the switch was the dread disconnects. Since all-in protection was eaten by the trolls, that's been an annoyance.
Ultimate Bet did try to 'fix' it but it was unfixable. They went as far as having a tech take over my computer and run test and attempts at a fix. They get an A for effort on that.
My old provider was Comcast. It is referred to by many as ComCrap. They have all these ads running here with such great deals and touting their improved speed and service. But, the fact is those numerous disconnect I'd see each day on sites and when the IM applet lost server connection are within their Terms of Service. They say they don't guarantee a solid connection and they have proven that correct.
DSL has a different topography. My connection is 'dumb' from the box on the house to the central office. Cable is a 'smart' network. Now you might think that smart is better than dumb but that isn't the case. It introduces the potential for latency. There are any number of ways their service can be compromised.
Smart here started on the corner with distribution point similar to a router. I'm close to the local head but across town they may end up going through several of these choke points. And, that local head isn't access to the Internet backbone. Instead it travels a couple of cities over to another aggregation router. That finally crosses the state line and meets the Giant Head or the real Internet.
Dumb means that bit of copper carries me to the office at current speed. At the office that pair ties directly to their Internet connection. I avoid the latency potential.
What does it all mean in the real world? I haven't had a disconnect since switching. Although, the speed I have (3M) is less than the various claimed speed for Comcast, I see web pages as quick and without the occasional pregnant pauses I'd some times get. On some days it was here and there and on others fairly consistent.
So, I seem to be out of the woods and can think a bit about playing higher. However, others still have those problems on the tables I am on.
While I am comfortable about not losing connection now, it remains unfair to those who have limited reliability. Every site I have contacted in this matter has said that they did away with it because people complain that such acts are angle shooting. They also say that their examination indicates that isn't the case. They can't salve the complaints over 'action flop' complaints but they did salve those same idiots by killing a valid protection. Without it I have an unfair advantage against those with the problem. Sad!
ADDENDUM:
Still stumbling around at roughly the $200 mark in my play. Nice hands are getting rivered by ugly little calling/chasing hands. It is part of the turf but isn't all that kind for the moment. Yeah, I too manage to suck out on occasion. Maybe it just seems like other are doing it more. I really can't complain; although, this is sounding a bit that way.
