Rebuys and Tournament gossip
Well I am not the tournament guru this guy is. I can’t remember the last time I had such a win or, to be honest, any tournament win. Having thrown a bit of money on Ultimate Bet and being bored/jaded/whatever helped but really I tripped over this $3 Rebuy $1500 Guarantee a couple of minutes from starting.
It reminded me a lot of the ones that used to come off every 2 hours on the old TonyG’s site. That was back when I was playing mostly Hold’em tournaments. First, I saw there was a huge overlay. And, it didn’t pay particularly deep so placing was worthwhile.
The game started with about 50% overlay, I think. Of course there’s no need to sweat them being out house money. At the break, the $1500 guarantee number had been exceeded nicely. Everybody talks about Donks but if you haven’t played cheap rebuys, your graded donks are rocket science class.
The one was a couple of seats to my left. He had a large and active mouth and an evidently unlimited bankroll. Now this little tournament paid 27 places. I think the bottom spot got up to around $12. This guy was doing double rebuys early and singles later. I think he could have gotten whole without final tabling but only just.
The guy was very impressed with himself and always explained why or how he lost and the mental competence of that opponent. He said something like King among peasants. And I had to remark. UB doesn’t capture chat in the HH file for some reason so I have to paraphrase.
Me: Yes, Rebuy King
He: They should never call blah blah blah
Me: Actually, you are the implied odds King
And the guy was. Any decent player had their range finder and sight picture locked on this guy. I don’t know the psychology of this; but, these cheap rebuys collect such players. They aren’t guys who normally play higher and on a lark. They are ‘serious’ about the situation and never heard the term bankroll management used. If you’ve got a sense of humor, they’ll keep you in stitches.
Little rebuys with player count overlays which start with a big house overlay with the silly ones always unsticking the house can be very profitable. Top money in the thing got close to $400. I play them mostly without the rebuy. I studiously try to avoid one and even try to avoid the addon.
I was fairly card dead most of the way. Ended up playing about and hour and a half and went out with my AA cracked. Never really had a stack in the latter period and didn’t expect to do well without a rush. I was proud of the fact that I didn’t boredom tilt. That’s the tilt that’s gotten me back to ring play.
Tournaments are a tough nut for most. Winning amounts versus player count are rough enough without even throwing in normal variance. But, I’ve always found these little rebuys profitable. The reasons are simple. This one had about half the players need to avoid an overlay. It paid 27 positions or about 1 in 10. And, first place amounted to around 125 times the single buy.
ADDENDUM:
Yes, this is a repeat from the old site. Just trying out posting.
