Poker Perambulation

This one is interesting and a bit troubling. It is a middle school in Oakland. That’s South LA North in many ways. Depressed-minority-crime like many combinations that disadvantage the young. It sustains the cycle. So, it is great when a school breaks children out of the easy path.

That said; the program seems a bit extreme. I can’t deny that such structure better prepares the child than the festival for humanity that is many of our school system goals. The young man the article cites that stayed home the one day is the real problem area for me. Based on the school’s standard and dictates, it was a mistake by him and his mother. But, expulsion is about 4 levels above what I’d see as appropriate. It was an execution before his peers. Executions are permanent. Our excuse for them is that they set an example.

I guess that I’m begging the issue a bit. The question I should ask is if I were a parent in such circumstances would I accept that for my child. Well, compared to the alternatives, yes. I’d probably think I’d won the lotto in fact. It sure isn’t the typical school in most suburban settings. There are some similar that are of a parochial nature. I went to such a school and it embraced many of the structured ideals but was less extreme. I got a better education than my peers.

Would today’s suburban parent seek out this school for their child? I doubt most would. As a result, their children may suffer the other extreme. We are a society where the mediocre have expectations that aren’t based on succeeding on their own.

So, here is the school I’ve been talking about. Anybody got a better idea?  I do think that if any of these kids take up poker they won’t be among those crying in the chat window.

I’m off to play a bit at UB. I didn’t play over the weekend because their levels reset and today is Day One for the new climb to VIP status.
